00:00:31: Excited I'm doing

00:01:10: great, thanks for having me.

00:01:12: Okay so do want to talk about something that i think was really special.

00:01:15: That kind of got the witness from behind stage which is interesting.

00:01:19: Yeah You were a very very special kid and now that I have a kid... ...I think it means that much more To be able to experience It.

00:01:27: How does it feel?

00:01:28: know your kid Does something and excels at Something he truly loves?

00:01:32: He's definitely my pride and joy.

00:01:35: And uh..that was A lot fun!

00:01:37: That was awesome.

00:01:39: And I think it's funny.

00:01:40: you spend your whole life thinking, Your Life is About You and then your son's born.

00:01:43: It starts drumming on like maybe i was just put here to give birth To him and raise him!

00:01:50: So um...it has been really fun watching him.

00:01:52: He's got a passion for music.

00:01:54: he plays couple hours per day.

00:01:56: Very cool to share that with the mass mutual family.

00:01:58: so lots of fun.

00:02:00: So I do now know that the musical interest comes from somewhere.

00:02:05: Where does it come from?

00:02:06: You want to tell everybody a little...

00:02:07: My grandfather's brother was like an Irish tenor, uh my dad's here is one of nine and my mom has won seven big Irish Catholic family.

00:02:15: And there was just never a party where there wasn't music going on with somebody you know picking up a guitar and singing.

00:02:22: so um There's always music in my house.

00:02:24: if he came into my house dude i share that with Jim Bolton who's out There's music always in our house and in our lives, so it's important.

00:02:33: Well talking about your household... I would argue the best Mali is Allie Mali my favorite.

00:02:39: maybe JP could beat you?

00:02:40: No they all be

00:02:41: you!

00:02:42: You're definitely third ranked Mali by book.

00:02:43: but tell me a little bit what that means to have an incredibly supportive partner in this business.

00:02:48: Yeah So Allie is amazing.

00:02:52: Allie was an agent.

00:02:53: i actually met Allie at work And so it's just been awesome to be married with somebody that understands the business, understand the ups and downs.

00:03:03: You know how cash flow comes in which is not every week day or month?

00:03:06: Sometimes

00:03:08: for a quarter

00:03:08: of an hour sometimes now for one-quarter.

00:03:11: So being married was supportive and understood what we did for people who were very meaningful.

00:03:19: as I moved into leadership became a GA her ability, I think to build relationships with our advisors and their spouses.

00:03:26: And it's just been great.

00:03:29: so couldn't do without her for sure.

00:03:31: Well given that I just elevated her into the number one Mali...I'm curious how did you trap her?

00:03:34: What was that story

00:03:35: about?

00:03:39: So the funny story is she actually took me on an appointment a year or two ahead of her in career and I believe, I sold a whole life policy for the client that she brought in.

00:03:51: You're doubt

00:03:51: about it being

00:03:53: whole-life?

00:03:53: Yeah!

00:03:55: It was love at first application.

00:03:56: i think... Love

00:03:57: At First Application!

00:03:59: Okay you know.

00:03:59: what's similar thing to my household too is uh..I call it love at like the seventeenth application.

00:04:04: so your better salesman than me!

00:04:06: There ya go!

00:04:07: I love that!

00:04:08: Look I had the pleasure of meeting with your father earlier today.

00:04:11: We share some commonalities on how we've lost our parent.

00:04:14: I know there's a cause that is very important to you, the big breakthrough bike challenge.

00:04:17: You've been in big anti-cancer fight and the cause raising money for guy for awhile.

00:04:23: just walk me through little bit of what does it mean for your family?

00:04:26: Yeah so i was mama boy for sure.

00:04:29: My mom wasn't ER nurse.

00:04:31: then got into home health care but she got diagnosed with cancer when my early thirties She fought it For four years.

00:04:40: we actually lost her on the fourth of July fifteen years ago coming up.

00:04:45: So, you know cancer sucks.

00:04:47: Yeah and Greg is my great buddy did a great job by the way but you know Cancer Sucks.

00:04:55: so friend of mine that's on board with a call called Breakthrough Challenge.

00:05:01: we raise money.

00:05:02: it all goes to Abramson Cancer Center at Penn.

00:05:05: The goal was help find cure for cancer.

00:05:09: We have raised alot of money which pretty amazing.

00:05:13: Hopefully we can get rid of the spreaded disease.

00:05:17: So that's cool.

00:05:18: Yeah, one thing I've noticed is they never get to see videos.

00:05:21: if you riding bikes and every year doing a little promo video raising more money How do we get?

00:05:25: Do i have to send my own camera crew out or is mass speech going to sponsor That.

00:05:29: And again hybril has gone.

00:05:31: um Joe, I know You as one of people that spends probably most time on self-improvement soft love self education making yourself You know, more intellectually and capable in sound.

00:05:43: I know you're a big reader or at least if now figured out there's no possible way to read as many books of the day.

00:05:48: is you claim you do so?

00:05:49: maybe listen to them on forex speed?

00:05:51: Or something like that.

00:05:53: when you can understand what i'm saying And talk fast Um...you've had me-I mean I would say friendship with you has basically just been an expensive book club.

00:06:00: Yeah

00:06:00: We were once a month.

00:06:01: it was cold day but you screwed up here.

00:06:03: Here's your book.

00:06:04: You gonna read this.

00:06:05: then come back tell him everything he learned.

00:06:07: I wanna start with Principles by Ray Dalio.

00:06:09: What does that book mean to you?

00:06:13: So, I love the book Principles.

00:06:15: Ray Dalios has a number of tidbits in their books.

00:06:19: One is pain plus reflection equals progress and i believe that...I don't think YOU can grow if your not suffering some type of pain And so how you think about pain is important.

00:06:34: So it's something I talk to JP about all the time, like you're probably not getting better and growing if your'e not suffering some type of

00:06:40: pain.".

00:06:41: And then other thing Ray Dalio talks about which we have discussed that he calls higher level thinking.

00:06:49: Higher-level thinking is kind taking your ego outside of your business... If think about a business operating like machine.. Thinking about role in that business.

00:07:01: think about what you're ideally suited to do inside of that business, and then make sure your not going up the works.

00:07:08: Make sure in their right position on any organization they are building.

00:07:13: so it's been my experience over years with advisors and teams and businesses.

00:07:19: sometimes people were just at a wrong spot.

00:07:23: People can't understand why things aren't doing well.

00:07:25: maybe its like the wrong person or job in the wrong setting.

00:07:31: Just a big believer in kind of higher level thinking.

00:07:33: You want to go pain and suffering first or high-level thinking?

00:07:35: First

00:07:36: it's up to you.

00:07:36: all

00:07:37: right I did a whole talk on bracing the suck last year, so let's call pain and Suffering yeah my therapist likes To say pain is what others do to use.

00:07:44: suffering Is What you Do to yourself.

00:07:45: Yeah Tell me about some Of your own Suffering.

00:07:48: um You know i think we've talked About on The David Goggins guy too.

00:07:52: So i read all the david goggling stuff.

00:07:53: i'm starting

00:07:53: to be fun of you for not being as fit As him.

00:07:55: yeah

00:07:56: I did a marathon while my mom was dying as I dealt with that, and then got into some triathlons.

00:08:03: But we've been through it all!

00:08:04: My wife has an autoimmune issue.

00:08:06: she battles... We went in vitro four times to have JP.

00:08:11: so when I say JP is a miracle he's a miracle.

00:08:23: I'm just a big believer having a positive mental attitude, being grateful even in spite of the hand that you're given sometimes and just trying to do your best every day.

00:08:34: I love it!

00:08:36: Can we get back into book club theme?

00:08:38: The newest book... This time he sent me this message with another former advisor for the year who was copying my taste.

00:08:46: I want point out now by Eckhart Tolle Tried to read this book or listen to it on audiobook.

00:08:55: It's gonna be one of the hardest things to digest.

00:08:58: We will definitely get everybody a list of Joe's I don't know Book Club readings by the end of their session.

00:09:05: What on earth does that book try?

00:09:07: To tell me what is?

00:09:07: and I know you're going ask me have I finished it?

00:09:10: no, I haven't finish it.

00:09:11: i'm on chapter four Like I can do twenty minutes at a time And requires me to stop doing everything else than anybody That you know Me.

00:09:17: I can't Do nothing for twenty whole Minutes and Listen to something.

00:09:19: yeah so Tell me when I'm supposed to Get out Of This book.

00:09:23: So I've told Kaldiv.

00:09:24: By far, i read the book five to ten times that listened to it.

00:09:26: um...I'll give a paraphrase of the book.

00:09:29: It's most people spend a lot time in their heads regretting past or worrying about future.

00:09:37: Um..i'm sure if you stop and think about conversations on your head You will very quickly realize That usually spending some time for the future Yeah!

00:09:46: Ummm....I just try get really focused being present When I'm with my son, when iI am in a conversation With the colleague or advisor to try To not be somewhere else.

00:09:57: and you know Be where My feet are.

00:09:59: I think Michael book Yes said that In A speech like be Where Your Feet Are And so That is very.

00:10:04: It's easier Said Than Done When You're a busy person.

00:10:07: Then You Got A Lot Of Things Going On But I Just Try To Always Try To Bring Myself Back To Making Sure I'm Where I Am In The Conversation.

00:10:16: I'm

00:10:16: curious because this is probably for me one of the hardest things.

00:10:19: And again, chapter four already got that part of the message.

00:10:21: how do you do it?

00:10:22: How did

00:10:24: you do not?

00:10:25: how does everybody what works For You?

00:10:27: if you read The Book What You'll Recognize If You Can Catch Yourself Either In The Past Or in The Future and You Actually Just Recognize It That Actually Pulls You Into The Present.

00:10:37: And Then There's Things That You can Do Exercise Music.

00:10:40: there's A Lot Of Things That i think You Can Do to kind of bring yourself into the present.

00:10:45: A lot of coaches that work with athletes talk about that, and I think Phil Jackson used to have somebody come in and talked his players about it.

00:10:52: but you know if you can make sure that your'e in a current moment when you're doing your thing um its probably where ya wanna be.

00:11:00: so we've talked alot about awareness training just self-awareness different types organizations do that as principle.

00:11:08: i know uve attended many these type seven hours.

00:11:10: you recommended a few me ive done couple.

00:11:12: now What do you think it actually does for people when they are in that moment?

00:11:19: Stay focused.

00:11:20: Um, stay calm You know help them plan better operate better act better I think Have better relationships, you know with the people that their closest to.

00:11:31: so maybe there's a lot of.

00:11:33: It's why i've read The book five times.

00:11:35: uh five what time is to get it.

00:11:36: yeah Okay, so

00:11:37: you're gonna walk

00:11:37: about a quarter way through Four more years until I get to your level of self-actualization.

00:11:42: A mastery,

00:11:43: sure.

00:11:43: God

00:11:43: it's self mastery.

00:11:44: Alright i'm gonna switch gears real quick.

00:11:46: um...I know you entered this profession straight out of college.

00:11:49: That's my story too.

00:11:50: Yeah You seem to have a lot overlapping stories.

00:11:52: yeah

00:11:53: different career track though right?

00:11:54: You were an advisor..you've done the sales manager thing ..You're just starting home office and This is kind of a special year for mass speech role.

00:12:05: now that you are here It's one hundred seventy five years.

00:12:07: What are you most excited about in this business, and this profession?

00:12:12: I'm just super-excited about what it is we get to do for people.

00:12:14: You know...I think Greg nailed the ability show up our clients help them make decisions that bring comfort at their worst possible moment.

00:12:24: like who else gets to do that?

00:12:26: uh..for a job and financial planning wealth management and then protection Like....what were able too far?

00:12:34: client's is really important.

00:12:37: To be affiliated with a company that has over a trillion dollars in death benefit is just mind-blowing.

00:12:43: Yeah, I gave my dad the stat last night and hopefully do it justice but A million seconds is eleven hours.

00:12:54: A billion seconds is thirty two years And a trillion seconds is three thousand years.

00:13:05: You can't imagine this

00:13:06: just to put a trillion in perspective.

00:13:09: So, to be leading an organization that has a hundred and seventy-five year history and a trillion dollars in protection and three hundred billion dollars in AUM those are all crazy numbers.

00:13:20: but really what it comes down is people and serving people.

00:13:26: I'm just passionate about...I've always been passionate about What we get to do for our clients And i think That's why Im In The Seat.

00:13:35: So now you're at this home office seat, so let's go backwards a little bit.

00:13:37: Yeah

00:13:38: prior to this You were general agent.

00:13:39: mass spiritual Eastern Pennsylvania Did a lot of great joint work with your agency?

00:13:43: I had a lot Of great conversations where he told me no you're not doing it This way you do in that way.

00:13:48: i think A lot of people here don't understand what the world of a ga is or The pain of a ga.

00:13:52: can you just Give us everybody a quick.

00:13:56: What Is It like To be a General Agent Whether its this system Or any System?

00:13:59: What Is That Experience They'll Possibly Never Understand?

00:14:03: yeah Listen, I think our advisors are a customer.

00:14:06: Um...I always knew my firm didn't exist without our advisors out there talking to clients.

00:14:12: I knew advisors have choice.

00:14:13: they could choose to do business with me and our firm or they can chose the do.

00:14:16: this is somewhere else.

00:14:18: so that way i was thought about it as I had to provide an experience and resources.

00:14:22: now we're going be better than them doing at some where else in.

00:14:25: so our entire organization in my firm was aligned around providing value.

00:14:32: Now, and I think that shows up in lots of different ways.

00:14:34: It shows up on technology resources.

00:14:36: I think it shows up business consulting...I know our advisors are business owners And they want to grow their practices.

00:14:43: so Consulting helping them grow getting the access to capital resources and support financial planning Support compliance support um..and i went to bed.

00:14:53: i woke Up every day.

00:14:54: i went To bed every night with like how can we create a better experience for our advisors?

00:14:59: I am bringing that into this role, you know.

00:15:01: This is a super competitive market we're in and every single person has choice.

00:15:08: We have an unbelievable culture put against anybody's... Let us talk about

00:15:12: culture!

00:15:13: Whether it was you as the general agent or now in current role leading all of the agents and advisors how do you build culture?

00:15:21: I think there are four thousand eight hundred people at Disney World with their kids last night you know, the ability to have my family here and...my child here.

00:15:33: And just share with people?

00:15:37: I don't think that exists at every company.

00:15:41: You can take it for granted but....I've been in a couple of firms and i really think our mutuality is something unique and proud of.

00:15:55: What would like change about culture?

00:15:59: I don't know that i would change anything, we gotta move faster.

00:16:03: That's something paul and the leadership team talk about.

00:16:06: like We get it!

00:16:08: We're in competition.

00:16:09: um...I Know every person is thinking about AI And how to run your practices more efficiently..and I can tell you uh To a person ,we hear You !We are on It.

00:16:19: !We Get It !

00:16:20: We want to win.

00:16:21: Like....i mean we really are committed to winning And that can't be lip service.

00:16:26: That has to be actions we take and so I'm here tell you, We're in it to win it!

00:16:33: So let's go further back into your career now.

00:16:35: Let's call me an advisor.

00:16:37: Were you a good adviser?

00:16:40: My wife thought she was married for awhile...

00:16:42: I don't know.

00:16:43: Should we get her up there with us?

00:16:45: That's a great

00:16:45: question.

00:16:47: I

00:16:49: love sitting down and listening to people talk about their dreams.

00:16:52: And what they were trying to accomplish, um...I loved helping people solve problems.

00:16:56: Um..I always thought i was going be an advisor honestly.

00:16:59: I kind of- I don't know how it got into leadership but you know ,i loved being an adviser.

00:17:04: so .

00:17:05: ..um....I think that takes a special person though!

00:17:08: You have to be good at asking really good questions ...and then ya have to listen.

00:17:12: And umm...I think people want work with somebody know they can trust and somebody that brings value to the table.

00:17:20: Back-to-value, so...

00:17:23: So that answers none of that question?

00:17:25: I agree with everything you said.

00:17:26: yeah

00:17:26: were you good?

00:17:27: like?

00:17:27: actually good how long did it take?

00:17:29: again i

00:17:29: made a living.

00:17:30: so i guess all right once.

00:17:32: i always tell people if you make it five years in this business you're a good advisor.

00:17:35: well surviving to thriving right.

00:17:36: yes got past

00:17:37: that.

00:17:37: i was a blue chip level producer.

00:17:39: okay so

00:17:40: pretty good that's pretty good.

00:17:41: it's a pretty good advisor.

00:17:42: Yeah

00:17:43: uh

00:17:44: what'd you suck at?

00:17:45: What do i suck at?

00:17:47: That's a good question.

00:17:48: Um,

00:17:50: so I didn't give it to you in the prep?

00:17:52: I don't know.

00:17:54: Impatience is probably if you say like... You would impatience!

00:17:57: Yeah

00:17:57: really

00:17:58: yeah i want to get things done.

00:17:59: So

00:18:00: just talked about speed

00:18:02: and being in the moment.

00:18:03: no i've probably been impatient.

00:18:04: okay

00:18:06: um we've talked a lot over the past about accountability.

00:18:08: what does that mean Tim?

00:18:12: Doing what you said your gonna do.

00:18:14: Showing up on time showing up on purpose.

00:18:18: My favorite trait is authenticity.

00:18:20: I talk about it all the time, but um...I love all types of people.

00:18:24: if they're authentic like i will accept you.

00:18:27: Um..i have a hard time with people that aren't real and you know act one way or how

00:18:33: do you know?

00:18:35: I think growing up in northeast Philly Like I don't know If You're just born With That But I definitely Have It.

00:18:42: You Know I know Pretty Quickly Whether Somebody Is Full Of It Or Not.

00:18:46: And So

00:18:47: Am I full of it?

00:18:49: I don't think so, thank you.

00:18:50: It's going

00:18:51: to gotten really different direction

00:18:53: than the
